The Allstate Sugar Bowl LHSAA Prep Classic will be here in under two weeks. That means champions will be crowned soon and Baton Rouge will have multiple schools vying for rings.
Baton Rouge’s defending champions Catholic High (Division I) and University High (Division I) are slated to return to the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on Dec. 6-8.
Catholic edged Rummel 13-10 in the semifinals on a 35-yard field goal by Cole Casenave with seven seconds remaining.
“I was obviously trying to think about the good kick I had before,” Casenave said to The Advocate. “I was just thinking about the preparation I’ve had during the season. I had a great coach. I just knew I was going to make it. It felt good coming off my foot. I was just proud for all these guys. It’s a great team. We deserved to win.”
Additionally, another defending champion, Class 5A Zachary, can join the fold this week as well.
Second-seeded Ascension Catholic was a Division IV runner-up last year and will have another chance at a championship.
Nationally ranked U-High is on a 25-game winning streak and will clash vs. No. 2 St. Thomas More (12-1) and its high-octane passing attack.

Advocate reporter Robin Fambrough notes this could be “U-High’s biggest challenge since playing 5A ZHS and Division I Catholic early in the season.”
Catholic (11-1) will face John Curtis (12-0) in a Division I title-game rematch. ACHS (12-1) goes against No. 4 Lafayette Christian (13-0) in a Division IV title-game rematch.
Fambrough implores fans from all teams to enjoy the final matchups on the gridiron this season.
“As much as I enjoy the games with local teams, I also like seeing teams from other parts of the state,” Fambrough said. “Though I am not fan of the select/nonselect split, there is one positive — more title games to watch. Like all good things, this high football school season ends soon. Catch it while you can.”
