STARKVILLE, Miss. — On a steamy evening at Davis Wade Stadium, self-inflicted wounds and Mississippi State quarterback Nick Fitzgerald were too much for LSU Football to overcome in the SEC opener.
LSU (2-1, 0-1 SEC), which had two players ejected for targeting in a nine-penalty game, fell to State (3-0, 1-0 SEC), 37-7.
Meanwhile, Fitzgerald and the Bulldogs scored 30 unanswered points against LSU’s defensive depleted from injury and disqualification. The junior passed for 180 yards with two touchdowns and ran for 88 with two more scores. Aeris Williams led the Bulldogs with 146 yards on 23 carries.
Running back Derrius Guice had 15 carries for 76 yards to lead LSU, while quarterback Danny Etling passed for 137 yards on 13-of-29 passing.
LSU was outgained, 465-270.
LSU returns to action Saturday, Sept. 23, when Syracuse (2-1) visits Tiger Stadium for the first time in history. The game time will be either 6 or 6:30 p.m. CT (television network and exact start time are expected to be announced by the SEC on Sunday).
