The 2011 LSU football season ended in a way LSU fans would not have expected. Last season, there were thoughts about which QB would be the most reliable at clutch time. Two names were constantly brought up before every single competitive team that LSU was about to face – Lee and Jefferson. While some Tiger fans were looking to rely on Jordan Jefferson to execute game-winning plays, others were looking for that in Jarrett Lee. It was a topic of conversation dominated by LSU fans in Baton Rouge, in Louisiana and all around the country. No such conversation this year.
This season, LSU fans are expecting to see their Tigers in a new light. There is a new era arising with starting QB Zach Mettenberger. I must say myself that I am extremely excited to see what this young man will bring to the field for the 2012 season. After watching some highlights, interviews, and recent spring practice footage I was predominantly pleased by Mettenberger’s skills. And it also pleased me to hear how well his teammates and coaches spoke about his progress off and on the field during interviews. He looks confident passing inside the pocket or on the run. Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing in at 225 pounds will surely work in his advantage while battling against the hard-nose defenses that are in the SEC.
Next weekend is the Spring Football game. I am pretty sure these previews of what is to come will hopefully meet a lot people’s expectations about the team and the new starting QB. I honestly can’t explain how excited I am to see what Mettenberger is going to show us all in this game and how he will grow throughout the season. Maybe Mettenberger will turn out to be that leading productive QB that LSU players, coaches, and fans have been waiting for.
