NEW ORLEANS – In the midst of one of the best seasons in recent history, the University of New Orleans men's basketball team added some home-grown firepower for the future as Crescent City native Scott Plaisance will join the program for the Spring 2017 semester, head coach Mark Slessinger announced Friday.

A 2014 graduate of Metairie Park Country Day School, Plaisance originally signed with Louisiana-Lafayette and spent the last two and a half years with the Ragin' Cajuns before being granted his release on Jan. 5. The six-foot, nine-inch, 217-pound power forward has enrolled for classes on the Lakefront and will practice with the team right away, and will become eligible to take the court for the Privateers in game action at the conclusion of the Fall 2017 semester.

"We are very excited to welcome Scottie to the University of New Orleans family," Slessinger said. "It is exciting to add a student-athlete with his background of success to our program. He will help to continue to add to our interior group with his size, and we are very excited to add his skill level to our team.

"Scott comes from a great basketball family in our city and will have tremendous support on and off the floor. We are looking forward to working with him and seeing him continue to develop on and off the floor as a student-athlete and leader."

During his time in Lafayette, Plaisance helped the Ragin' Cajuns post a 30-19 overall record, including a 19-15 mark which culminated with a trip to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament quarterfinals last season. He saw action in 29 career games with one start, tallying 60 points (2.1 ppg), 45 rebounds (1.6 rpg), eight blocks (0.3 bpg), four steals (0.1 spg) and two assists (0.1 apg) while shooting .550 from the field (22-of-40) and .593 from the free throw line (16-of-27).

After redshirting as a true freshman in 2014-15, Plaisance posted career-high marks of 10 points vs Nicholls on Dec. 1, 2016, seven rebounds vs Panhandle State on Nov. 17, 2016, two steals vs Texas State on Jan. 28, 2016, and two blocks vs Loyola-New Orleans on both Nov. 25, 2015, and Dec. 17, 2016. Off the court, he was a member of the UL-Lafayette Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC).

In four prep seasons at Metairie Park Country Day for head coach Mike McGuire, Plaisance helped the Cajuns to a combined 92-45 overall record, a perfect 44-0 mark in district play and four playoff appearances, including state titles as a junior and senior. He claimed first-team all-state and all-metro recognition his final two prep campaigns and was named first-team all-district each season, claiming recognition from District 9-1A as a freshman and senior and from District 10-1A as a sophomore and junior.

As a senior, Plaisance was named District Player of the Year after averaging 16.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 4.0 blocks per game. He also garnered Class 1A State MVP recognition as a junior after posting 15.8 points, 10.3 rebounds, 4.1 blocks and 1.2 assists per outing. That season, he was tabbed New Orleans Small School Player of the Week by NOLA.com on Dec. 26, 2012, after averaging 15.3 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.8 blocks per game during the Country Day Classic and again on March 5, 2013 after averaging 23.5 points and 10.0 rebounds in two more victories.

Plaisance comes from a strong basketball family. His mother, Mary "DoBee" Plaisance, played basketball at both UNO and Southeastern Louisiana, served as the head women's basketball coach at Loyola-New Orleans for 13 years and is in her ninth season at the helm of the women's hoops program at Nicholls State University. His sister Theresa, meanwhile, was a two-time All-SEC selection at LSU, was selected in third round (27th overall) in the 2014 WNBA Draft by the Tulsa Shock and is currently a member of the WNBA's Dallas Wings.

"I am looking forward continuing my college career here at the University of New Orleans," Plaisance said. "Coach Slessinger, his staff and the team have made me feel very welcomed and the family atmosphere that surrounds this program is one that I will no doubt enjoying during my time in a Privateer uniform. The team has made tremendous strides over the last year and I am excited about the opportunity to help take UNO to the next level."

Plaisance is one of five newcomers slated to take the court for UNO in 2017-18, joining guards Lamont Berzat (New Orleans, La./Landry-Walker HS) and Damion Rosser (McDonoug, Ga./Henry County HS), wing Tyren Harrison (St. Albans, N.Y./Western Oklahoma State College) and post Bol Reik (Bentiu, South Sudan/Mooseheart [Ill.] HS), who signed National Letters of Intent with the Privateers during the NCAA Early Signing Period in November.

While Privateer fans will have to wait until next season to see Plaisance and the incoming class represent UNO on the hardwood, the current New Orleans team returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 19, when it plays host to Southland Conference foe Houston Baptist in Lakefront Arena. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m., and tickets are available through the UNO Athletics Ticket Office over the phone at (504) 280-GAME (4263) or via the Internet by clicking HERE.
