LIONS HOST COWBOYS, CARDINALS TO CLOSE OUT REGULAR-SEASON
HAMMOND – After playing seven of its past nine games on the road, the Southeastern Louisiana University men’s basketball team returns home to the friendly confines of the University Center when the Lions host McNeese State on Thursday in a Southland Conference contest.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. and will follow the Southeastern-McNeese State women’s game that is slated to start at 5:15. Both games can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9), on the internet at www.LionSports.net and on the KSLU and TuneIn Radio iPhone apps.
Southeastern (10-17, 8-8 SLC), which looks to snap a four-game losing streak, returns home for the first time since a 54-50 victory over league leader Stephen F. Austin on Feb. 16. The Lions, who look to clinch a first-round bye in next week’s Southland Conference Basketball Tournament in Katy, Texas, close out the regular-season on Saturday when it plays host to Lamar at 4 p.m.
This week’s games will mark the final home appearances for seniors Brandon Fortenberry, Roosevelt Johnson, Todd Nelson and Jan Petrovcic who will be honored prior to Saturday’s game.
Fortenberry leads Southeastern in scoring at 14.0 points per game with Johnson averaging 10.6 points and a team-high 8.3 rebounds. Dre Evans is next in scoring for the Lions at 8.8 points and is followed by Jeffery Ricard (8.7), Onochie Ochie (5.4), Nelson (5.1) and Antonnio Benton (5.0).
McNeese State (12-15, 6-10 SLC) looks to bounce back after dropping a 68-67 decision to Central Arkansas on Saturday. The Cowboys have dropped two of their last three games after earning a 65-58 victory over the Lions on Feb. 19 in Lake Charles. Dontae Cannon scored a game-high 19 points to lead McNeese State to the win while Desharick Guidry added 17 and Kevin Hardy 14.
Guidry leads the Cowboys with 12.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game with Cannon next in scoring at 11.8 points. Hardy (9.6), Jeremie Mitchell (8.8), Craig McFerrin (8.3) and Adrian Fields (5.0) are next in scoring for McNeese State, which closes out the regular-season on Saturday at Nicholls State.
