Walker Throws Six Shutout Innings; Tigers Sweep WSU

BATON ROUGE, La. – No. 6 LSU (12-4) defeated Wichita State, 9-2, to sweep the Shockers in the final non-conference series ahead of Southeastern Conference play Sunday afternoon at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field.

Freshman Eric Walker started for the fourth-straight week and moved to 2-0 on the season with six innings of shutout baseball. Walker allowed just three hits and struck out three WSU batters on Sunday.

The Shockers dropped to 8-6 on the year with Sunday’s setback. Wichita State starter Zach Lewis (0-1) suffered the loss, as he allowed seven runs, six earned, on nine hits in just three innings.

LSU returns for its newest game on the schedule against Louisiana College at 6:30 p.m. CT Tuesday at The Box. The game was scheduled to replace the LSU-San Diego contest that was rained out earlier this week.

Fans may use their Game #9 LSU-San Diego tickets in order to be admitted to Tuesday’s LSU-Louisiana College game.

The game will be available online through the SEC Network+ and can be accessed through the WatchESPN.com and the WatchESPN app. The game will also be broadcast live on the affiliates of the LSU Sports Radio Network, including 98.1 FM in Baton Rouge.  Fans can go to LSUsports.net for live stats and audio.

“We executed extremely well offensively at the start of the game,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “We had a series of hard base hits, and we executed the game plan with our hit-and-runs exactly as we needed to. Eric Walker threw a lot of strikes and was able to do a great job for us for six innings. We built the big lead, then held on to get through the end of the game.”

The Tigers opened the game with a three-run first inning of off four hits. After Kramer Robertson and Cole Freeman were in scoring position after a pair of singles, Antoine Duplantis singled to right field to plate the pair.

With the bases loaded and two outs, Chris Reid notched his second RBI of the season on a single off the pitcher’s glove to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.

The home team added to the lead in the third inning thanks to a three hits and a Wichita State error. With freshman Josh Smith on first after a one-out single, fellow newcomer Jake Slaughter brought him on a perfectly executed hit-and-run with a double down the left-field line.

LSU plated run No. 5 when Slaughter scored from third on a throwing error by Shocker shortstop Trey Vickers.

Duplantis once again delivered in the bottom of the fourth inning. With Robertson and Freeman on via a hit by pitch and double respectively, Duplantis singled to right-center field for his third and fourth RBI of the afternoon.

With a pair of runners in scoring position in the bottom of the fifth, a wild pitch by reliever Codi Heuer allowed Reid to score from third. The Tigers plated the ninth run of the afternoon on a throwing error by the WSU shortstop to allow Robertson to score.

The Shockers put a pair of runs on the board in the seventh. With runners in scoring position after a pair of walks and wild pitch by reliever Austin Bain, Alec Bohm singled up the middle off of Caleb Gilbert to score two.

“I like where our team is after 16 games of the season,” Mainieri said. “We’re playing good baseball, and we know our team pretty well. We’re just going to take them one game at a time and keep moving forward.”
