LSU finishes trip to Kansas
LAWRENCE, Kan. – LSU junior pitcher Allie Walljasper pulled the double on Saturday against Southeast Missouri State as her two-run home run gave LSU the lead back in the fifth, while also earning the victory in the circle in defeating the Redhawks 7-3 to end play in the Rock Chalk Challenge in Lawrence.
After taking the early lead in the first thanks to a two-run shot from the bat of Sahvanna Jaquish, the Tigers (23-7) watched the lead evaporate as the visitors scored three unanswered runs in the next two innings. Walljasper came in to pitch after that and was stingy in the circle, taking matters into her own hands to kick start a streak of five unanswered runs for the Tigers to pull ahead and stay there while pounding out 10 hits.
The Manteca, California, native pitched the final 4.1 innings and allowed just one hit with three strikeouts, going 1-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs and a run scored.
Jaquish finished the game leading the team in RBIs with three, going 1-for-2 with a home run, two walks, two RBIs and two runs scored. The Tigers also got big days from underclassmen in Taylor Satchell who hit her first career LSU home run amid two hits, while Aliyah Andrews went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
SEMO’s (15-8) Mackenzie Hoelting held LSU to just two runs on four hits with a pair of strikeouts and walks, but only pitched two innings as Alexis Estes wound up suffering the loss as she pitched the next three, giving up five runs on six hits with three strikeouts and a walk.
Rachel Anderson had two of the Redhawks’ five hits in the game offensively.
The Game Turned When…
In the bottom of the fifth and trailing by a run at 3-2, Jaquish drew a walk to reach first, and after a foul out to first, Walljasper blasted her home run to right center, giving LSU the lead back at 4-3. The Tigers would go on to score three more in the next inning to close the door and help secure the victory.
