LSU COMPLETES WEEKEND SWEEP WITH 2-0 SHUTOUT OVER NICHOLLS STATE

BATON ROUGE, La-- Left-hander Cody Glenn’s seven shutout innings and a two-run sixth inning guided No. 4 LSU (10-1) to a 2-0 victory over Nicholls State (7-5) at Alex Box Stadium on Sunday.

LSU capped off a successful weekend after a pair of victories over Brown. The Tigers defeated the Bears by scores of 4-3 and 7-1 on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Over the course of the weekend, Glenn (2-0) and starters Aaron Nola and Ryan Eades combined to not allow an earned run. Inm fact, LSU starting pitchers have not allowed an earned run in 27.2 consecutive innings of work. The Tigers starters have not allowed an earned run since February 24, when Eades allowed a run in the sixth inning against Southeastern Louisiana.

Glenn has not allowed an earned run in all three of his starts and matched his career high with seven innings pitched after accomplishing the same feat Tuesday in the victory over ULL. The southpaw struck out five Sunday and allowed three hits and one walk.

“Cody Glenn was magnificent today and made great pitches in clutch situations,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “He had to pitch with a lot of pressure since the game was scoreless for so long, and he demonstrated a great ability to handle it. We finally strung together some hits in the sixth to give Cody some runs, and our bullpen was excellent again today to help us secure the win.”

LSU relievers Joey Bourgeois and Chris Cotton combined to strike out five in the eighth and ninth inning, respectively. Cotton picked up his third save of the season after striking out the side in the final frame.

Nicholls’ starter Taylor Byrd (2-1) picked up the loss in a solid effort. Byrd did not allow an LSU hit until the fifth inning  and LSU finally touched him for two runs in the sixth.

Third baseman Christian Ibarra chopped a one-out single between third and short and moved to third on right fielder Sean McMullen’s bloop single to center. Centerfielder Mark Laird scored Ibarra with a single to right and advanced McMullen a base.

Shortstop Alex Bregman produced the game’s second run off of a hard hit single up the middle, which scored McMullen from second.

LSU’s offense combined for seven hits, five of them off of Bryd. Seniors Raph Rhymes and Mason Katz increased their hit streaks to nine games apiece.

The Colonels mounted their best threat in the top of the first inning. Glenn stranded a runner on third after a pair of strikeouts and proceeded to retire nine consecutive batters until Ibarra’s error in the top of the fourth.

Following Ibarra’s error, Glenn continued his dominance by retiring the next seven batters. After allowing the first batter of the game to reach base with a single, Glenn did not give up another hit until the first batter of the sixth inning.

Laird robbed Nicholls catcher Cody Dufrene of an extra-base hit in the top of the third inning with a diving catch just in front of the warning track in center.

LSU will play Stephen F. Austin at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Alex Box Stadium. Visit www.LSUtix.net to purchase tickets for the game.
