Hiltz And Haiss Go Top-Six In New York
NEW YORK – Arkansas middle distance duo Nikki Hiltz and Therese Haiss finished among the top-six best runners in the invitational section of the mile at the Armory Invitational in New York on Saturday afternoon.
Hiltz was the Razorbacks’ best performer of the day, clocking a time of four minutes, 37.96 seconds to place fourth overall as the strongest collegian in the field. Haiss crossed the finish line not too far behind, placing sixth in the event with 4:44.01.
“Nikki [Hiltz] was able to get up into the front four and run very well,” head coach Lance Harter said. “The end result wasn’t exactly what we had hoped for; the rabbit went out slow and she [Nikki] and Therese [Haiss] both got screened in when the professionals took off. It was a race of experience and it gives these guys a chance to have a bit more confidence when they race against collegians.”
Arkansas will return to the track next weekend with a group taking on the Husky Classic hosted by Washington and another group set to compete back at the Randal Track Tyson Center in the Tyson Invitational.
“Will split the forces and the long distance crew will head out to Washington to try and get some NCAA qualifying marks as well as some good performances for the SEC list,” Harter said. “Our sprint crew is running on ‘the fastest track in the world,’ so they’re in great shape and it’s always fun to run in front of a home crowd.”
